Boris Johnson is expected to resign as Prime Minister today, and is expected to address the nation later to outline future plans.

The PM has been under pressure to quit since Tuesday when Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid quit. Since then more than 50 Tory MPs have handed in their resignations.

This came after the PM admitted he knew about inappropriate behaviour allegations regarding former Deputy Chief whip Chris Pincher in 2019, but still appointed him in February this year.

It’s not yet been announced who will replace him, as the PM is still due to announce the nation later today.

A No 10 Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister will make a statement to the country today.”

Who will replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister?

Although it's not yet been announced, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes the most likely candidate is Penny Mordaunt, with 5/1 odds.

Ms Mordaunt was appointed Minister of Sate at the Department for International Trade on September 16 2021, and she has been member of parliament for Portsmouth North since 2010.

She was a key supporter of Brexit in the Leave campaign in 2016, and is also well known for appearing on the reality TV show Splash!

Ms Mordaunt took part in the diving competition alongside celebrities such as Gemma Collins in 2014.

The bookies' next likely candidate is Rishi Sunak, with 11/2 odds.

Sunak, who was hailed as a hero for his furlough scheme which helped thousands of Brits during the Covid pandemic, was one of the first to resign over the scandal.

Next on Ladbrokes' list of contenders is Ben Wallace, with 6/1 odds.

Defence Secretary Wallace has repeatedly backed Johnson, and took to Twitter to say: "A number of us have an obligation to keep this country safe, no matter who is PM.

"The Party has a mechanism to change leaders and that is the mechanism which I advise colleagues to use. In the meantime, the public would not forgive us if we left these Offices of State empty."

One person who commented on the post, said: "Ben Wallace MP", another said: "Good call".

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "This might be the most wide-open leadership race in history, with no less than eight names priced at 12/1 or shorter to replace Johnson as things stand."

However, Ladbrokes has this morning slashed odds on Suella Braverman replacing Johnson.

Her odds were slashed from 100/1 to just 33/1 in just a few hours.

Suella called for Johnson to quit, and and has said "it would be the greatest honour" to join the tory leadership race.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Suella Braverman has seemingly thrown her hat into the ring and given the interest we've seen so far this morning, we wouldn't be surprised to see her close the gap on the frontrunners over the next few hours."
