Labour and Tory MPs suspended for commenting on Israel-Hamas war

The Middlesbrough MP used the phrase “between the river and the sea” at a London demo.

Some marchers yelled “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” in recent protests and Home Secretary Suella Braverman claimed the slogan is “widely understood” to call for the destruction of Israel.

A Labour spokesman said: “The comments made by Andy McDonald at the weekend were deeply offensive, particularly at a time of rising anti-Semitism. The chief whip has suspended the Labour whip from Andy McDonald, pending an investigation.”

The former shadow minister said last night his full comment showed he called for peace for “all peoples in the region”.

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak sacked junior minister Paul Bristow who urged a permanent break in the Hamas-Israel war. The UK stance is to call for a pause in conflict not a ceasefire – the PM says Israel has a right to defend itself as it tries to rescue more than 200 captives seized by terrorists who murdered more than 1,400 Israelis.

The Peterborough MP, inset, who was parliamentary private secretary at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, said: “I can now talk openly about an issue so many of my constituents care deeply about.”
