The former Labour Party leader does not believe the bacon sandwich incident was to blame for ending his chances of becoming Prime Minister. Instead, Mr Miliband believes the true reason for his party’s defeat at the hands of David Cameron’s Conservative Party was down to “deeper reasons”. The picture of the then Labour leader struggling to eat the butty was captured in May 2014 and quickly became the subject of much ridicule.

Despite the parody that followed, Mr Miliband does not believe the incident was the cause of Labour’s election woes.

He told LBC: “I joke about the bacon sandwich. I don’t think I lost because of the bacon sandwich.

“I lost for that, and in a way, I shouldn’t console myself by thinking it was just because of the bacon sandwich.”

The Labour MP went on to offer some friendly advice to listeners.

Mr Miliband said: “I do say don’t eat on camera.

“To anyone on camera, I am the paradigm lesson: don’t eat on camera.”

Snaps of the 45-year-old opposition leader awkwardly eating the sandwich were taken in a London cafe during a campaign stop.

The London Evening Standard later published the image, which subsequently went viral spawning a host of mocking memes.

Mr Miliband also became the butt of many jokes on social media in the following weeks and months.

However, the Labour politician has subsequently been able to laugh off the occasion and was happy to share in the joke six years on.

It comes as in the same interview with LBC Mr Miliband conceded that the argument over Brexit was over.

He said: “I actually think Brexit is a big idea. I didn’t support it but I think it is a big idea.”

Mr Miliband added: “We’ve got to build a post-Brexit future.

“I didn’t see Brexit as an opportunity. I now see it as a necessity.

“It has happened and we’ve got to build a future. There’s no point in sort of bleating on about it.

“We had the referendum. We had the general election. It was a decisive result.”
