Downing Street has confirmed civil servant Sue Gray will pause her investigation into gatherings that touch on potentially criminal acts and will for the time being focus only on events not being looked at by the Met Police.

It means the full results of the investigation may not be published for months.

There have been allegations of 17 events in Downing Street that broke lockdown rules, but Scotland Yard are understood to only be investigating eight of them.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “The PM fully acknowledges the public’s anger and concern about what has been reported, he has taken responsibility for his judgments made and it is right the Met should be now given the time and space to undertake their investigations.

“It will provide the public with welcome clarity and help draw a line under these events and everyone required will fully cooperate in any way they are asked.”

Many Conservative MPs have been holding back on submitting letters of no confidence in the Prime Minister over allegations of the Government failing to follow its own Covid rules until after the Gray report was published.

They argued it would layout in black and white whether Mr Johnson was responsible for any wrongdoing in No10.
