Barclays Selects Angela Liu as CEO of China

Barclays, one of the world’s leading banks, announced today that it has appointed Angela Liu, an industry veteran with over two decades of experience in the global banking sector, as CEO of China.

The press release shared by Barclays states that the newly appointed CEO of China will report to Jaideep Khanna, Head of Barclays, Asia Pacific. In her new role, Liu will be responsible for the expansion of Barclays’ cross-border CIB platform in China.

In her most recent role, Liu worked as the Head of Institutional Client Group China and Hong Kong at Deutsche Bank. Previously, she spent more than 17 years at Morgan Stanley. Additionally, the newly appointed CEO of China served as Chairman of the Board for Morgan Stanley Bank International (China).

Commenting on the latest appointment, Jaideep Khanna, Head of Barclays, Asia Pacific, said: “China presents a big opportunity for growth in the Asia Pacific. Barclays’ global cross-border CIB platform and our strong collaboration between businesses will continue to drive growth for our clients in China. We are delighted to have Angela join Barclays to continue the expansion of our China franchise in a systematic and phased approach.”

In June 2021, Barclays expanded its team in Asia through the appointment of Ee Ching Tay, the former Managing Director and Head of Southeast Asia M&A at JPMorgan, as its new Head of Southeast Asia Banking.

CIB Platform

In the latest announcement, Barclays mentioned that the bank is planning to enhance its cross-border CIB platform in China to meet the growing demand. “Ms Liu will also be leading Barclays’ China growth initiatives across all product lines in Global Markets, Investment Banking and Corporate Banking, in partnership with the bank’s regional heads of the CIB and will also work with Ms Grace Kuo, Barclays’ Shanghai Branch Manager,” Barclays added.

Liu graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor’s and Masters in Applied Mathematics.
