Results of North Carolina investigation into police shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. expected Tuesday
A North Carolina prosecutor on Tuesday is expected to reveal the results of a state investigation into the fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr., an unarmed Black man who was killed last month by sheriff’s deputies.
District Attorney Andrew Womble said he would discuss the State Bureau of Investigation probe’s findings at a news conference Tuesday morning.
Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot Brown on April 21 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, while attempting to serve him with an arrest warrant, authorities have said. The deputies shot Brown five times, including once in the back of his head, according to an independent autopsy commissioned by his family.
The three deputies involved are on leave while four others who were at the scene have been reinstated after police said they didn’t fire their weapons.
Despite pressure and outrage from the public, the deputies’ body camera footage has not been publicly released but was shown to the family following a court order. The court ruling limited the family to seeing less than 20 minutes of more than two hours of video of the incident.Deputies’ faces were also redacted.

Brown’s family and police dispute what the video shows.
Womble previously said deputies opened fire as Brown attempted to flee and hit deputies with his vehicle. Earlier in May, lawyers for Brown’s family called the deputies “unequivocally unjustified,” saying Brown was not armed and did not drive toward deputies or pose a threat.
The shooting came just one day after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted on all charges in the murder of George Floyd, prompting protests demanding transparency and the release of body camera footage in Elizabeth City.
