You can buy the Pill WITHOUT prescription at Boots today
YOU can buy the contraceptive pill over the counter from Boots today, without a prescription.
It is the first of hundreds of pharmacies in the UK which will start offering the birth control in store this summer.
The move marks the first time in history that women can get the Pill without the permission of a doctor.
Instead, women will have a consultation with a trained pharmacist to decide if they are suitable.
The UK drugs watchdog the MHRA ruled earlier this month that women should be able to buy the pill over the counter.
The milestone move will make it easier for women to get birth control, considering GP appointments can be a hassle and walk-in clinics can have long waits.
Only the progesterone-only pill (POP), otherwise known as the “mini pill”, will be on offer at first – HRA Pharma's Hana and Maxwellia’s product Lovima.
POP is just one type of contraceptive pill, and does not contain oestrogen like the combined pill.
Desogestrel is a synthetic form of the female sex hormone progesterone.
It is the most commonly prescribed POP in the UK and is used by millions of women.
Women will also be able to access Hana from Boots.com, and is priced at £9.95 for 28 days and £21.95 for three months.
Bina Mehta, Pharmacist at Boots in Piccadilly Circus, explains: “Hana is an easy to use and incredibly popular contraceptive method with a good safety profile.
“It is suitable for anyone who has had their first period and it can be taken until the menopause, unless there is a medical reason it shouldn’t be used.
“It is also suitable for those who can’t use oestrogen-based methods of contraception, such as the combined pill, and is 99 per cent effective when taken correctly.”
Last week, Hana became available on Superdrug.com and it will soon be rolled out to the chain’s 200 pharmacies.
