‘World’s oldest man’ who liked to drink and ride horses dies aged 127

The "world's oldest man" who loved his booze and took rides on horses until just a few years ago, has died at the incredible age of 127.

Jose Paulino Gomes, who enjoyed a little tipple and up until four years ago was riding around on horses, passed away in Brazil according to local reports.

According to written record, the 127-year-old was born before the first-ever rugby league football game and was older than the discovery of the X-ray.

Records show Mr Gomes was born on August 4, 1895, and he was married by the age of 22, which means if the record is true, Jose will be the oldest person to have ever lived.

Jose's granddaughter Eliane Ferreira told local media: "Here in the countryside, people are usually registered when they are older.

"There are several cases with incorrect documentation. But his documentation showed he was younger than he actually was. There is a lady nearby who is 98 years old.

"That's when we became curious to confirm his age and looked up the registry office to find out what was correct."

Since looking up his age, it appeared the bloke was "at least 110", and the family are now pursuing a formal death certificate.

Jose leaves behind seven children, 25, grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren, and was described as an "simple, very humble" man.

Eliane said: "He was very simple, very humble. His uniqueness was that he didn't like anything industrialised, only things from the countryside, natural.

"He raised chickens, pigs… His food was all from here, had to be grown or raised here. And he always liked to have a little drink."

Further tributes to the animal tamer from his granddaughter, Fabiola Oliveira, added: "Four years ago, he stopped riding horses. For about a month, he was in bed. He will leave behind many stories and memories for all of us."
