A woman has been left ‘fuming’ after she claims she was refused entry to bars for wearing an England football top.
Hayley Mortimer, a politics reporter for BBC Radio Gloucestershire and BBC Politics West, was eager to find somewhere to watch the England v Ukraine match in Manchester on Saturday night.
But it seems bars in the city weren’t in the patriotic mood as Ms Mortimer was turned away for sporting her home team attire, Gloucestershire Live reports.
“Nah I can’t believe no one is letting me into any bars in Manchester because I’m wearing an England top,” she tweeted.
“Fuming, where’s the pride? #Itscominghome”
Her post, which was ‘liked’ more than 100 times, attracted bemused responses, with one person replying: “Why to get folk to come for the match then allow your bouncers to turn away those with shirts on such a night?”
“Unacceptable,” another said.
A third branded the news a “joke” but said she didn’t have the same problems where she was drinking in the city.
Meanwhile, others seemed to believe the ‘no football tops’ is a standard dress code in bars.
“Pretty common for a pub to ban football shirts,” one tweeted.
“Also a pub doesn’t have to give you a reason in order to refuse service, part of licensing conditions. Perhaps just drink somewhere else?”
A second quipped: “It is called dress code. If your clothes don’t meet their request, they are within their rights to refuse you entry.”
It’s not unheard of to be turned away for wearing a football top on game night, according to one footie fan.
Football fan who set up JustGiving for crying German girl branded 'paedo' by trolls
“Happened to me in good old Gloucester way back in 2002, New Inn on the day England beat Argentina with Beckham penalty.”
Spurs fan Ms Mortimer was over the moon after England captain Harry Kane scored twice in Saturday's night’s stunning victory against Ukraine.
She tweeted of the Spurs captain: “He’s one of our own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.”
An earlier picture of the journalist with a drink in hand and wearing her England shirt was captioned: “It’s coming home.”
