Do we have a bank holiday for Prince Philip’s funeral?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

While large parts of the country will come to a standstill in order to watch the day unfold on TV, the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh does not mandate the public a day off work.

Is there a national period of mourning?

Yes. The country has entered a national period of mourning that is to be ‘observed by all’ and will last until the day of the funeral.

During this period, flags on public buildings will be flown at half-mast, MPs will wear black armbands on their left arm in parliament and local governments will give ‘careful thought’ to the continuation of any official business.

The period of national mourning was planned in detail under Operation Forth Bridge, which was drawn up before the Duke’s death.

When do we get a bank holiday for a funeral?

Brits won’t have a bank holiday for Prince Phillip’s funeral.

The day of the Queen’s state funeral will be declared a bank holiday and The Stock Exchange will close.

The public can also expect a day off work when the state funeral of any future monarch takes place.
