Why being a Dave could pave the way to the rich list
Why being a Dave could pave the way to the rich list – as men with the name rake in £28million in 16 years from the Postcode Lottery
- One man called Dave is calling for his namesakes to sign up to the lottery
Called Dave? You’ve won the lottery of life.
Well, sort of. Men with the name have notched up more than 1.3million wins with the People’s Postcode Lottery over the last 16 years, raking in £28million worth of cash prizes.
Players called John are not far behind, bagging over 1.2million prizes totalling nearly £27million. Paul, Susan and Michael are the next most common winners.
Among the triumphant Daves is chef David Dickie, 63, who has been playing the Postcode Lottery only since March 2021 and pocketed £35,000 this year.
The father-of-six, from Gorebridge, Midlothian, said: ‘Since I won, almost my entire street has started playing the postcode lottery. At the time there was only three of us that got the money.’

He is now urging his namesakes to sign up to the lottery, which costs £12 a month. Entrants use their postcode for all draws and every Saturday all entrants in the winning postcode share £1million.
Charities get at least a third of the ticket money raised.
Of course the research into winners’ names is not cast-iron. Dave is after all one of Britain’s most common names.
And former prime minister David ‘call me Dave’ Cameron did not exactly go through a winning streak in the latter years of his life in the lottery of politics.
