Victorian government confident state has enough power supply

The Victorian government insists the state has sufficient energy supply, and it has no plans to reverse the permanent ban on coal seam gas exploration.

Senior minister Jacinta Allan said the government would push ahead with its long-standing policy on transitioning to renewable energy in the face of the energy crisis gripping the country.

She said the Australian Energy Market Operator advised the government Victoria had enough gas supply. She added there was no advice to ask big electricity users, such as Alcoa’s Portland smelter, to power down.

“There is undoubtedly pressure on our energy supply but the advice from AEMO is that Victoria has adequate power supply,” she said.

Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King warned that Victoria’s ban could limit future supply.

Asked if Victoria would revisit its permanent ban on coal seam gas exploration, Allan said the country needed to work together to transition to renewable energy.

More to come.
