Ukrainian soldiers forced to drag belligerent beaver from their trench

A Ukrainian beaver has proved the latest “enemy” of the defending forces as footage revealed a brigade making multiple attempts to remove the animal. In an unspecified region of the frontline, the persistent beaver appeared determined to remain alongside the soldiers, hurtling back towards the trenches seconds after being dragged out by its tail.

In one video, a Ukrainian soldier wearing gloves can be seen pulling the beaver through the zig-zagging trench by the tail.

As the animal attempts to claw into the loose soil at the bottom of the trench, the soldier yanks the beaver up the stairs.

Having got the animal out of the trench, the soldier then drags the beaver several metres away from the entrance.

Several other soldiers then flee as the unfortunate Ukrainian tasked with removing the animal lets go of the beaver.

But the animal appears determined to remain in the trenches alongside the soldiers.

Once released, the beaver darts towards the jumpy soldiers, pushing past them and making a beeline for the trench.

Another video shows the animal tumbling down the trench steps after it failed to slow itself down upon its approach.

Having descended the steps, the animal then saunters away from the soldiers, deeper into the trench.

The belligerent beaver has become a joke on social media among Ukrainian soldiers, journalists and reporters.

One Twitter user, who posted a second video of the beaver, wrote: “The continuation of the battle between the Ukrainian military and the beaver appeared on the network

“Unfortunately, after the enemy was pushed back from the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he struck with renewed vigour, completely taking control of the trench.”

Another user wrote: “Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, a beaver in Ukraine decides to join the Armed Forces and reserves a personal trench.”

Ukrainian soldiers have a long history with beavers after the animals were credited with helping prevent Russia from opening up a second offensive from Belarus at the start of this year.

A Ukrainian military spokesman credited the dam-building creatures for miles of thick mud, waterlogged fields and burst river banks in the northwest of the country.

Serhiy Khominskyi, a spokesman for the Volyn territorial defence brigade, said that the beavers had become their newest, and most unlikely, allies against any such invasion from Belarus by making the ground marshy and impassable.

“When they build their dams, normally people destroy them, but they didn’t this year because of the war, so now there is water everywhere,” he said.
