UK weather – Brits to be battered by thunderstorms as 12 HOURS of rain with travel chaos and flooding to come
THUNDERSTORMS are set to batter Britain today with a solid 12 hours of heavy downpours.
Forecasters have warned torrential rain, floods and power cuts are on the way as the UK is hit by a deluge of severe weather.
A yellow warning for rain is in place for the eastern side of the country, with "heavy showers" to come.
These will turn "thundery" come the evening – and it will feel chilly compared to recent nights, according to The Met Office.
There is a risk of localised flooding and travel disruption, as well as power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.
The weather warning covers the majority of eastern England from midday until midnight, stretching as far north as Newcastle reaching down to the south coast.
A Met Office forecaster said: "There is a fair amount of rain in the forecast.
"Rain will move eastwards during the course of the morning, becoming heavy during the early afternoon.
"Temperatures will generally be a notch down on Saturday, a cooler day for many.
"That rain will continue into Sunday evening in the east."
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin added: "The main three weather elements will be foggy conditions in the morning, some heavy showers around – in fact, some big downpours are likely, but by no means for everyone – and there will be some warm sunshine around also.
"Basically, we're expecting a bit more cloud on Sunday and a greater chance of seeing some heavy showers.
"Some big downpours are possible. A lot of rain could fall in a relatively short space of time."
There will be further cloud and scattered showers across south east England on Monday, with patchy rain in the north west later in the day.
But it will be dry and sunny elsewhere, with temperatures hovering in the high teens.
Tuesday will see a cold front moving south east across Scotland and Northern Ireland, but it will weaken as it crosses England and Wales on Wednesday, according to Netweather.
"Blustery showers following across the north and generally it looks like a windy and cool day," forecasters added.
'HEAVY BURSTS OF RAIN'
Later in the week there will be some foggy patches, with "unsettled and potentially windy" conditions in the Midlands and north of England.
Rain is also expected, and will be heaviest and most prolonged in the north west.
It could see this month go down as the wettest September on record, according to Ladbrokes.
With large swathes of heavy showers battering the UK and flooding likely on Sunday, the bookies have cut the odds to 5/4.
Some big downpours are possible. A lot of rain could fall in a relatively short space of time.
Jessica O'Reilly of Ladbrokes said: "Despite highs of 25C on Saturday, it's a whole different picture for Sunday's weather thanks to heavy bursts of rain all over the country.
"It looks like September's going to be a record breaker, but for all the wrong reasons."
However, there is a chance Saturday's sunshine could return for some areas next week.
Temperatures have been significantly warmer than normal for the first half of September, averaging almost three degrees above the long-term average for the month.
And it could continue, with "fine" conditions and "sunny spells" expected in the south east.
