Two snowmobilers killed in avalanche near Winter Park

Two snowmobilers were killed in an avalanche a few miles east of Winter Park Saturday, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

The avalanche happened around 2 p.m. on Corona Pass in the area of Mount Epworth and Deadman Lake, according to the sheriff’s office. Both snowmobilers were caught and buried in the avalanche.

One rider was wearing an avalanche transceiver, and another group in the area was able to find the rider, free him from the snow and attempt to resuscitate him, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Those efforts were unsuccessful and the man, identified only as a 58-year-old from Northern Colorado, died.

The second rider was not wearing an avalanche transceiver and rescue teams could not find the rider before nightfall Saturday. Search efforts will continue Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Four people have now died in avalanches in Colorado during this year’s season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, including a backcountry skier who died on New Year’s Eve and a father who was splitboarding with his three teenage sons.
