Trial for STEM School shooting suspect Devon Erickson delayed until May

The trial for the older student charged in connection with the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting has been delayed again as courts contend with doing business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Devon Erickson’s trial in Douglas County District Court had been scheduled for Feb. 1 and is now slated to begin May 24 and last a month.

The other student charged in the fatal May 7, 2018, school shooting, Alec McKinney, pleaded guilty in February to first-degree murder and 16 other charges. He was sentenced in July to life in prison, plus 38 years with the possibility of parole.

George Brauchler, the former 18th Judicial District Attorney who was asked stay on to prosecute this case, did not seek the death penalty for Erickson. The 20-year-old, who pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Kendrick Castillo, 18, was killed and eight others injured in the shooting.
