The Queen pens ‘secret message’ to carry on royals’ 90-year sporting tradition
The Queen has been helping to kickstart the countdown to the Commonwealth Games for over 90 years as it is revealed Her Majesty has a ‘secret’ message placed in the baton.
While officially launching the Queen's Baton Relay with Prince Edward on Thursday, The Royal Family’s twitter account shared a video of The Queen writing a message addressing the Commonwealth.
Her hand-written message is then placed in the baton, which will be taken on a 90,000 mile journey over 294 days, before arriving in Birmingham for the Commonwealth games next year.
The note will remain hidden inside the baton and will only be read during the opening ceremony in July.
The Queen and The Earl of Wessex helped pass the baton at Buckingham Palace yesterday to the first baton bearer Paralympian Kadeena Cox.
Kadeena later passed the baton onto Team England squash player Declan James and Team Wales boxer Lauren Price at The Queen Victoria Memorial.
Future baton carriers will include artistic gymnast Alice Kinsella, Team Scotland hockey player Sarah Robertson and Team Northern Ireland cyclist Mark Downey.

The baton will then go through all 72 nations and territories in the Commonwealth before heading for the ceremony in Birmingham.
Technology has been equipped to the baton to add a 360 degree-camera, heart rate monitor, atmospheric sensors and LED lighting.
Originally, the baton relay only went through England and the host nation but has expanded significantly over the years.
