Teacher who won legal right to have sex with students jailed for romps with teen
A female teacher who once won a legal battle that allowed her to have sex with pupils has been jailed for 10 years for romping with a student.
Psychology teacher Carrie Witt made history when a court allowed her to launch a legal campaign her to have sex with students over the age of consent.
But her challenge, which lasted more than four years, was later quashed by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in the US, leading to her sentence for having sex with a 17-year-old student.
Judges rejected her appeal to change US law, which forbids sex between teachers and students.
She was initially charged with having sex with two students, but she finally pleaded guilty to one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under 19. The other was dismissed by prosecutors.
She faced up to 20 years being bars.
She almost got away with it, according to US network News 19, which reported the charges against her had been dropped due to her legal challenge.
She successfully argued the law under which she was charged was unconstitutional.
She also claimed she was only being prosecuted for a consensual relationship because she was a school employee.
She said that the case against her violated her 14th Amendment right to privacy and equal protection, said the news channel.
However, News 19 added that prosecutors appealed against the decision and the judgement was overruled. The charges were then reinstated.

Witt quit her job at Decatur City Schools in 2018, after being on paid administrative leave for two years.
Despite the decade-long sentence, Witt will only serve 18 months in prison, followed by 18 months in the community corrections program. The rest will be served on probation.
She also has to register as a sex offender.
