Storm Eunice rips giant hole in roof of London’s iconic O2 arena

Storm Eunice has ripped a giant hole in the roof of one of London's most famous landmarks, the O2 arena.

This comes as the capital has been put on a rare red weather warning – which means a "danger to life" – as a result of the strong winds reaching up to 80mph.

Witness Mala Sharma told the PA news agency that "more and more parts are getting ripped off", adding, "it's going to be a safety issue for people around".

She said that it happened "right in front of my eyes" and that the damage "started off with a patch" but then a "chunk" of the dome roof ripped off.

Londoners have been urged to "stay at home" as what is being called the worst storm in 30 years sweeps across the city.

Gusts of up to 80mph are predicted today, February 18, however a wind gust of 122mph on the Isle of Wight is provisionally the highest gust ever recorded in England, the Met Office said.
