Taking to Twitter, the New Zealand native unleashed a furious tirade against his nation’s Prime Minister and condemned the new rules. Mr Wootton has been an outspoken critic of Ardern’s rules which have kept some people out of the country for almost two years.

Mr Wootton asked: “Why is @jacindaardern imprisoning some New Zealand passport holders to 26 days under guard in quarantine hotels on return?

“Where is the evidence that this is necessary?”

He also tweeted that some people were “experiencing such bad mental health effects they are being prescribed drugs.

“A sick policy.”

In a separate tweet Mr Wootton shared a picture of David Cohen’s article for the NZ Herald entitled: ‘New Zealand, the ‘hermit nation’ that time forgot’.

In his article Mr Cohen bemoans Ms Ardern’s incredibly strict COVID-19 restrictions, which have meant that many of the one million New Zealand citizens living abroad have been unable to return home for most of the past two years

Mr Wootton tweeted: “The world is waking up to the unfathomable stupidity and horrendous cruelty of Dear Leader Ardern’s Zero Covid hermit kingdom, where 1 million Kiwis abroad have been illegally banned from their own country.

“I adore the freedom fighters in New Zealand standing up to the madness.”

Over 15,000 New Zealanders are currently suing Ardern’s government for breaching their human rights by not allowing them back into the country.

Mr Wootton also shared Douglas K Murphy’s comments in The Daily Telegraph: “What will come of New Zealand?

“Perhaps it will remain always stuck in the summer of 2020, never allowing anyone in or out.

“Those of us who once went there will tell of it to our grandchildren.”

Ms Ardern’s Zero Covid policy has meant the nation only suffered 53 deaths from the virus.

But her country has paid a price for these low numbers.

Self-isolation rules brought in to deal with the Omicron variant have seen the quarantine period for contacts of a positive test rise to 24 days, far above the UK’s requirement.

A phased reopening of the country’s borders has now been announced for vaccinated travellers, meaning expats from around the world can return from March 13.

However, travellers from some countries will have to wait until October before they can go to New Zealand.
