Shark bloodbath as lifeguard on training exercise ‘bitten in the chest and hand’

A US lifeguard has been rushed to hospital after he was savaged by a shark of the coast of Long Island yesterday (July 3).

Zach Gallo, had been doing a training exercise in the sea off Smith Point Beach when he was attacked from below by the predator.

Gallo, who required stitches for his wounds, was bit in the chest and the hand by the shark, which then swam away.

After rushing to the shore, Gallo was taken to hospital and stabilised.

Police have since shut the beach and are searching for the shark, although it’s thought they will reopen over the July 4th holidays.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said: “We are very grateful he is doing well. I just spoke to him a short time ago.

"We have never had an incident like this occur. Hopefully, we never will again."

The attack is just the latest in a string of shark attacks that have shocked the world in recent days.

Last week, Addison Bethea, 17, was attacked by a 9ft shark in Florida which left her with severe injuries.

Recalling the attack at Keaton Beach, she told Good Morning America: "The next thing I know something latches onto my leg and I was like that's not right.

"And then I look over and it's a big old shark.

"Then I remember from watching the Animal Planet to like…punch [it] in the nose or something like that. And I couldn't get around to his nose the way he bit me."

Addison's horrified brother, Rhett Willingham, rushed to help his sister, ABC News reports.

He said: "She came back up and I saw, like, the blood and everything, and I saw the shark.

"So then I swam over there, grabbed her, and then pushed them all, kind of trying to separate them. And he just kept coming. So I grabbed her, swam backwards and kicked him and then yelled for help."

Addison suffered serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Tallahassee.
