- Southend coastguard commended the boys’ ‘bravery and instinct’
- The man was taken to hospital and is still recovering from the incident
Two schoolboys have been hailed as heroes after they used their paddleboard to rescue a man who had fallen from an inflatable dinghy in strong currents off the Essex coast.
Alex Wayman, ten, and brother Jack, 14, were on a family trip to West Beach in Shoebury when they heard cries for help from the man’s family.

‘It was at that point that my boys paddled out to help him,’ said their mother Lorna Croarkin, 40. ‘He tried to climb on to the kayak but it was too much weight for them so they directed him to hold on to the paddleboard and kick, and they paddled back. . . I don’t think he would’ve survived if the boys hadn’t intervened.’
She added that she was ‘incredibly proud’ of her sons. Southend coastguard commended the boys’ ‘unselfishness, bravery and instinct’. The man was taken to hospital and is recovering.
