‘Same attitude!’ Xi Jinping compared to Hitler as Aussie MP issues China warning

The 51-year-old Defence Minister said China could be on the cusp of a Nazi Germany-like campaign and is preying on Labor’s weaknesses. Mr Dutton warned the Indo-Pacific region was becoming more dangerous every day.

Speaking ahead of the next elections, the Defence Minister doubled down on his criticism of Labor leader Anthony Albanese, whom he says the Chinese Community Party has backed as their preferred Prime Minister.

Mr Dutton said it was “absolutely clear” that the Chinese government wanted a change of government in Australia but warned “history could repeat itself” if Labor won, making reference to the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

He told 2GB: “They [the Chinese government] see a weakness in Anthony Albanese and his frontbench.

“They believe that he would be more passive and he wouldn’t push back against aggression.

“That’s why they want a change of government … that’s why there was such a heavy censoring of the PM’s WeChat account. We can’t be blind to it.

“Some people want to pretend it’s not a reality in our lifetime … that was the attitude of the 1930s.

“We’ve got to learn the lessons of history and make sure they’re not repeated.”

While Australia wanted a good relationship with China, Mr Dutton said that it would not cower and China needed to respect “our democracy, our rule of law and our freedom of speech”.

Recently, Mr Dutton had warned that Australia and its allies must stand up to China and its expansion in the South China Sea before it is too late.

He had also said Western countries had tolerated Beijing’s increasing presence in the region as it constructed artificial islands and established military bases in the disputed sea.

Mr Dutton said for years Beijing gave assurances about its position in the strategic area – bordered by China, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Borneo – and was taken at its word.

He told The Sydney Morning Herald: “The US and others acquiesced and allowed the militarisation now to the point where China has 20 points of presence in the South China Sea, which does not help stability in the region.

“If we continue on that trajectory, then I think we’ll lose the next decade.

“And my sense is that we’re better off being honest about that.”
