Russians ‘sent to war in trainers’ may ‘freeze to death before battle’ in winter

Russian troops are being sent to fight “in trainers” with many likely to “freeze to death before battle” as a chilling Ukrainian winter looms, a top general has declared.

General Sir Richard Shirreff, the former deputy supreme allied commander for Europe, said things are looking bleak for Putin’s minions as boots are in short supply with temperatures set to plummet.

He wrote in the Daily Mail: “Already we are seeing waves of recruits sent to the front line in trainers, because boots are in short supply.

“As the Ukrainian winter sets in, many of these unlucky conscripts might freeze to death before they see battle, contributing to a collapse in morale.

“The toll of casualties will be immense and though we know Russians are prepared to endure pain, they are also not afraid of revolution.”

The top military expert explained that bonkers Vladimir Putin’s demands to quickly mobilise 300,000 troops led to soldiers not being trained to a high standard before being sent to fight as most military commanders are already in eastern Europe.

On top of this, the sudden increase in fighters risks the Russian army not having a sufficient supply of kit and weapons to last them over a very harsh winter of snow, rain and cold.

Allies of Ukraine have already started to increase donations of insulated clothing including coats as hats to help brave defenders push back against their invaders.

Russian supply lines have proved to be weak throughout their bloody invasion and this could get even worse over the winter months.

Sir Richard added: “Putin will need a lot more manpower if he is to take on Ukraine’s military counteroffensive – and it may not be as simple as he would like the West to believe…

“Ramping up the war will require mobilisation on an even larger scale and, even if Putin is able to force hordes of untrained men into a makeshift army, they will have scarcely any kit or weapons.”
