Police in Morocco have opened an investigation into a French tourist who is suspected to have killed his two young children, according to reports. The Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) said the holidaymaker also attempted to take his own life.
Officers in Marrakesh began enquiries on Monday, after a 72-year-old man was found unconscious in a hotel room beside the bodies of a 9-year-old and a 13-year-old.
In a statement, given to French and Moroccan media, DGSN said an initial investigation of the scene suggested the children had been injected with a suspicious substance.
It noted that the French tourist is “suspected of having committee a premeditated homicide by injecting his two minor children”. An autopsy is underway.
An inspection of the bodies of both the children and the French national suggested no signs of violence or resistance.
However, used medical syringes were recovered from the scene.
Officers reportedly found a handwritten letter purportedly explaining the motives for the suspected murder, which were said to be family-related.
The ex-wife of the suspect, a retired nurse, is also said to be under investigation, and is also suspected to be involved in the incident.
The suspect has been transferred to a nearby hospital, where he is in intensive care, DGSN said.
