US President Joe Biden told Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Saturday that the West would respond decisively to any invasion of Ukraine, adding such a step would produce widespread suffering and isolate Moscow. In the latest effort to manage growing hostility, the two men spoke by phone for an hour a day after Washington and its allies warned that the Russian military, which has 100,000 troops massed near Ukraine, could invade at any moment. Moscow has dismissed those warnings as “hysteria.” But reseracher Dr Jacob Lassin has claimed Russia secured a major win against NATO members.

Speaking to GB News, Dr Lassin said: “I do think that regardless of what happens going forward Putin has definitely won a lot of the narrative battle and he’s gotten a lot of airtime and concession in the sense that people have had to address these issues.

“He’s been able to divide the NATO members so that we get different responses at a time between friends in Germany, the UK and the US.

“He’s definitely been able to manipulate things and get things going in that direction if he wants to.

“I think the most important thing going forward is for us to listen to what the Ukrainians are saying.

“They’re the ones who obviously have the most stake in this.

“They’re the ones who know the situation best and as President Zelensky has been saying, panic doesn’t help anyone except for Putin.”

It comes as President Putin could launch an invasion of Ukraine “almost immediately”, the UK believes as diplomatic efforts continued to avert a war in eastern Europe.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned on Monday an invasion could take place within 48 hours as he urged Russia’s president to step back from the “edge of a precipice”.

Lavrov urges Putin to continue talks with West over Ukraine

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who chaired a meeting of the Government’s Cobra emergency committee, urged Britons to leave Ukraine by commercial routes while they still could because of the risk of an “imminent Russian invasion”.

Russia has accused the UK and US of a propaganda campaign and insisted it was ready to continue talks.

The Prime Minister was receiving a briefing on the latest intelligence from the UK’s spy chiefs and cut short a planned visit to northern England to lead a Cobra meeting on Tuesday.

On a visit to Rosyth shipyard in Scotland, he said: “This is a very, very dangerous, difficult situation, we are on the edge of a precipice but there is still time for President Putin to step back.”

He called for more dialogue and urged Russia to avoid a “disastrous” invasion.

Reports based on US intelligence assessments have suggested an invasion could be launched as soon as Wednesday.

The Prime Minister said: “The signs, as you’ve heard from (US) President (Joe) Biden that they’re at least planning for something that could take place as early as in the next 48 hours.

“That is extremely concerning.”
