Prince Harry’s one explosive book claim that left Prince William ‘gobsmacked’
Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare” was jam-packed with bombshell revelations – from his Afghanistan body count to how he lost his virginity.
But amid all of the book’s incredible revelations, there is one that has shocked Harry’s older brother Prince William the most – the tale of the Nazi costume, which reportedly left his brother "gobsmacked" after it featured in the book.
In 2005 Harry wore a brown shirt and swastika armband to a “Native and Colonial” theme party hosted by Olympic show jumper Richard Meade.

After photos of the event emerged, Harry’s outfit caused a major scandal, and he was forced to apologise for the “poor choice of costume”, adding that he was “very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone”.
Writing in Spare about what he called “probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said that Kate and Wills put him up to it.
Harry said that before the party he showed the two possible costumes he might wear, a pilot's outfit or the Nazi uniform.
He wrote: "I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought… ‘Nazi uniform,’ they said."
He added that he later modelled the stormtrooper suit for them and they "both howled".
They told him it was "worse than Willy's leotard outfit!", he recalled. "Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point.”

A friend of Prince William confided to The Daily Beast: “It just demonstrates how utterly f***ed the relationship is that Harry resorted to dragging up this thing that literally happened almost 20 years ago. William was completely gobsmacked by it.”
But quite why this particular anecdote stands out as being offensive to William is unclear.
Royal expert Daniela Elser has one theory, that William is unhappy about the emergence of the story because it shows his beloved wife Kate in a bad light.

“Kate might have gotten plenty of bad press over the years for her penchant for the Caribbean and, for a while anyway, loose understanding of the concept of ‘work’ but this costume detail represented a much more serious charge,” Elser writes.
The fact that it directly connects the Princess of Wales to the accusations of racism that have been plaguing the Royal Family for several years now, she says, makes it for William the most toxic and potentially damaging of all Harry’s claims.
