It means tinned tomatoes, puree and passatta are now around 30p more expensive at Asda, Ocado, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Researchers have blamed a salad and vegetable shortage last year, which was caused by the weather.

In particular, poor crop harvests meant tomatoes were in shortage, but vegetables in general dropped by 17 per cent.

The price of pasta, noodles and cakes also rose by 14 per cent between January 2017 and 2018.

Prices have gone down in baby care products, which now cost 7 per cent less on average, as well as ten per cent cheaper laundry products and 14 per cent less for suncare.
