Mum ‘tried to cut out son’s tongue before shooting and dumping him in trunk’

A mother has been accused of the brutal murder of her 10-year-old son after police found his body in the trunk of her car.

Kaitlyn Higgins, 28, was arrested in the early hours of April 21 after allegedly attempting to cut her child's tongue out before shooting him and hiding his body.

The Louisville Metro Police Department received a call about Higgins after a gun and the dead boy wrapped in a blanket was found, WLKY reports.

Responding officers attended the scene at the 1200 block of Algonquin Parkway in the Taylor-Berry neighbourhood of Louisville, Kentucky, where they found Higgins on the porch with blood on the steps.

Officers searched the surrounding areas, including the 28-year-old's vehicle where they found her son's body with a gunshot wound.

Higgins allegedly admitted to attempting to cut the boy’s tongue and shooting him before putting him in the trunk.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later identified the boy as Kyon Higgins Jr., Louisville Courier Journal reports.

The boy's official cause of death is still pending the results of an autopsy.

The mum is charged with murder-domestic violence and tampering with physical evidence.

Her bond was doubled from $250,000 to $500,000 during an arraignment hearing on April 22.

Higgins also has a two-year-old child who is under the care of her relatives, according to the Police.

The children's babysitter, Miah Lancaster, was shocked at the news as she told reporters: "This wasn't the Kaitlyn I knew."

Describing the boy, Miah said he was "a sweet loving child. He was such a good boy."

The family's neighbours, Chris and Jim Banks were devastated to hear of the crime in what they feel is a safe neighbourhood.

Chris said to the Louisville Courier Journal: "Oh my goodness. That just breaks my heart."
