Most of England placed under 18-hour alert for treacherous thunderstorms
Most of England is bracing itself for heavy thunderstorms, rain, and lightning today.
Nearly all of the country has been slapped with a yellow weather warning by the Met Office which is in place for 18 hours.
The alert, which begins at 6am Saturday and runs until midnight, is expected to bring sudden flooding, disruptions to public transport, and hail.
Brits can expect to see heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and lightning during the washout weekend.
The warning covers areas from Middlesborough down to Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Peterborough, and Birmingham.
Cambridge, Hertfordshire, Essex, all of London, and parts of the south are also affected.
In Kent, the furthest east and southern parts are predicted to be in the clear, with the likes of Canterbury and Brighton at the bottom of the UK.
Northern Portsmouth and Bath should also see the thunderstorms, with Exeter and parts of Plymouth not included in the warning.
However, a separate weather alert for rain is in place between 1pm and 9pm for Devon and Cornwall, meaning most of England is set to see some rain today.

Britons are being told driving conditions may become difficult, roads may shut, and rural areas may end up being cut off by flooding.
There is also a chance power cuts occur which could affect homes and businesses.
The Met Office states: "An area of heavy rain and some thunderstorms is expected to develop on Saturday morning over southern England and then move northeastwards before clearing into the North Sea Saturday afternoon.
"Many places will see a short period of heavy rain whilst some may see a more prolonged period of rain along with some intense bursts, with lightning and hail. Under the heavier rain, some sites could see 30-40 mm rain falling in a few hours.
"Once this clears, further heavy showers are expected to break out. These will be more hit-and-miss with many sites staying dry following early rain, but where they do occur, there is a chance of 30-35 mm rain falling in an hour, again accompanied by lightning and hail."
