Loud mooing can be heard as the animals hurtle past drivers’ windows in the bovine breakout, in footage recorded by recovery driver Joe Clift, 28.

Drivers on one side of the road have opted to stop and let the animals avoid them, while some on the other road continue cautiously on their way.

Mr Clift, 28, who was heading to a breakdown in Dover at the time, told KentOnline: ‘I just thought, “What the hell are these cows doing in the road”. It’s a weird thing to see at 5.30am.

‘I was just heading down to a breakdown and just saw them all coming towards us. I lost count of how many there were.’
