Millions of people on Universal Credit and other benefits could be set for £10 Christmas cash boost – see if you qualify

  • The annual Christmas bonus is paid out in the first full week of December 
  • It will be welcome news for Britons as a help with Christmas shopping and food 

Millions of people on Universal Credit and other benefits could be set for a £10 cash boost this Christmas. 

The annual ‘Christmas bonus’ is paid out in the first full week of December – which falls this year between December 4 and 10. 

The small cash boost will be welcome news to many, as Britons get underway with their Christmas shopping, advent and preparations for Christmas dinner. 

The small sum won’t need to be repaid and is automatically paid into the bank account where benefits payments are usually sent.

It will be separate to a regular benefits payment and should show up as DWP XB on a bank statement.

To qualify for the cash boost, you must fulfil the below requirements.  

You must be on one of the below to receive the bonus during the qualifying week of December: 

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance 
  • Carer’s Allowance 
  • Child Disability Payment 
  • Constant Attendance Allowance 
  • Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance 
  • Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate 
  • Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers) 
  • Mobility Supplement 
  • Pension Credit – the guarantee element 
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) 
  • State Pension 
  • Severe Disablement Allowance 
  • Unemployability Supplement or Allowance 
  • War Disablement Pension at State Pension age 
  • War Widow’s Pension 
  • Widowed Mother’s Allowance 
  • Widowed Parent’s Allowance 
  • Widow’s Pension

Claimants will also need to be a resident of the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar. 

In February 2023, 22.4 million people claimed some combination of DWP benefits. Of these, 12.8 million were of State Pension age. 

If you believe you may qualify for the £10 boost but aren’t sure you will receive it automatically, you can contact your local Jobcentre Plus office that deals with your payments or the Pension Service.
