Met Office issues 400 mile-long UK weather warning of 70mph wind and downpours

The Met Office have issued a series of weather warnings spanning 430 miles as huge swathes of the UK are expected to be hit with downpours and strong winds..

A yellow warning for rain was issued for this evening (April 11) from 3pm until the end of the day.

"Heavy rain this afternoon and evening may lead to some difficult travel conditions," the forecaster warned.

The heavy showers are expected to batter Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland, including Dumfries and Galloway, Scottish Borders, Strathclyde, Argyll and Bute, Ayrshire, Inverclyde and South Lanarkshire.

Meanwhile across Dunfries and Galloway, the northwest of England and large parts of, Wales another yellow weather warning, this time for strong winds, is in place until 11pm.

The Met Office said the gusts would bring "potential for some disruption."

Another two yellow wind warnings have been issued for tomorrow (April 12), one covering all of Northern Ireland from 11am until 8pm.

Another affecting south Wales and parts of southern England, including East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Kent and the Isle of Wight, will be in place from 6am until 8pm.

Areas facing windy conditions have been warned journeys could take longer today and tomorrow as disruption to most forms of transport is probable, while "delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely."

The Met Office has also warned some areas could experience power cuts and coastal regions could be affected by "spray and/or large waves".

Meanwhile regions hit by heavy showers could experience longer bus and train times as well as spray, or even flooding, on roads.

And these aren't the only regions in the UK looking at a very unsettled couple of days.

Most of the UK has seen rainfall today, with some places occasionally catching the odd glimpse of the sunny weather many Brits enjoyed over the Easter weekend.

Tomorrow looks drier for most but parts of the country, such as Wales, the north and southwest of England, London and the surrounding area and parts of Scotland, will continue to see showers.

It's going to be windy across much of the country tomorrow too, even in places where no weather warnings have been issued.
