Brits are currently roasting in what has been confirmed as the hottest day of the year so far, on the first day of the long Easter weekend.

A forehead dampening 22C has been recorded in St James Park in central London, the Met Office announced this afternoon.

The forecaster said that the mercury was likely to creep even higher as the day went on, with hopes of a heatwave growing.

The temperature means the previous hottest day – March 23, also recorded in St James Park – was toppled by a full 1.2C.

"The temperature has risen to 22C at St James's Park in London making it the #WarmestDayOfTheYearSofar," the Met Office tweeted at 1.30pm.

"We will see them climb a little further over the next few hours too."

The Met Office had earlier predicted that a mini weekend heatwave was set to bring record-breaking temperatures to the UK both today and tomorrow.

According to the Met Office, the Midlands and the South should hover at around 18C to 19C this afternoon, with the mercury jumping between 14C to 16C elsewhere in the UK.

The scorching conditions even prompted weather forecast meteorologist Helen Roberts to issue a warning to Brits, saying: "Do bear in mind, it is very easy to burn in the sunshine at this time of year."

She continued: "[There will be] A lot of dry and fine weather around on Saturday (April 16), and temperatures once again reaching the low twenties in parts of the South East."

To be exact, the Met Office say Londoners will be basking in a 21C heat on Saturday, with 18C hitting the South, the Midlands and parts of the North East too.

Helen added: "[It is] Always a little bit cooler around coastal areas, particularly where we have an onshore breeze."

Unfortunately, Saturday will mark the end of the short summery blast as a new weather front moves across the country on Sunday and heading into Monday.

Helen explained: "Overnight Saturday into Sunday it's a mixture of patchy cloud, some clear spells and still a few showers across parts of Scotland.

"And we start to see that change coming our way later on Sunday, more especially into Monday, as a weather front brings some more unsettled weather with some outbreaks of rain and cooler conditions as we enter the long Easter weekend."
