Meghan doesn’t ‘wish Royal pain on Archie’ but will honour son’s ‘birthright’

Meghan Markle said she understands the "pain" that comes with having a Royal title, but admitted she won't deny her son, Archie, of his "birthright" to have one.

The Duchess of Sussex sat down with friend, and U.S. chat show host, Oprah Winfrey, in March to discuss what life was like for her as a member of the Royal Family.

Before Prince Harry joined her, Meghan explained her "experience" claiming "good and bad," came from holding her Royal title, as well as a "lot of pain."

Meghan said she understands the downsides of life living so publicly but wishes Archie will be able to make his own "choice" about his heritage one day.

The former Suits star went as far as to say that it is Archie's "birthright" to hold a HRH moniker.

She told Oprah: "I have a lot of clarity on what comes with the titles, good and bad, and, from my experience, a lot of pain.

"I wouldn’t wish pain on my child, but that is their birthright to then make a choice about."

Meghan's claim that it is Archie's birthright to have a title isn't strictly true, as under laws laid out by King George V, only Royals who are born to a soverign are entitled to a title.

  • Prince Harry has realised he's 'frozen out and turned his back on Royal life'

Archie will likely be offered a title when Prince Charles takes the throne however, as the Prince of Wales is his grandfather.

Prince Charles will not take the throne until his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, abdicates, or, sadly, passes away.

It is a matter of time then, when Archie will be given this choice, and it isn't clear what age the young Royal will be.

Archie Mountbatten Windsor turns 2 on May 6 2021.

The little toddler has spent most of his life outside of the UK, as his parents navigated removing themselves as senior members of the Firm back in January 2020, when Archie was just eight months old.

He now lives in Montecito, California, with his mum, Meghan and Dad, Harry, and will soon have a baby sister to look after.

Archie is in part, the inspiration for Meghan Markle's new book The Bench, a tale of father-son bonding seen through a mother's eyes.
