Meghan and Harry are attending Jubilee so they are ‘seen as royal’, says expert
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will return to the UK for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations because they "need to be seen as royal", according to a royal expert.
It has also been said that the decision to come back is "entirely due to branding".
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced last week that they would travel from California, US to attend Jubilee events in the first week of June.
Since they sensationally stepped down as working royals in 2020, they have only returned to the UK together once, meeting with the Queen at Windsor in April ahead of the Invictus Games.
Their son Archie, three, and daughter Lilibet, 11 months, will also join them, meaning that it'll be Lilibet's first time in her dad's home country, reports the Mirror.
Despite this, royal author and broadcaster Hugo Vickers says that their attendance at the celebrations is to ensure they maintain their royal brand.
He told True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat: "I think it’s entirely to do with branding because the further away that he [Harry] gets from the Royal Family, he turns into a guy in blue jeans, with a ginger beard, coming off a plane with a backpack on.
"Which isn't very marketable in my point of view.”
Meanwhile, Russell Myers, royal editor of the Mirror, added: "I think they would have wanted to be on the balcony, of course. There is an argument to say that they still need to be seen as royal.
"This is one of the biggest events of the generation and they need to stay relevant.
"They’re not having a great time at the moment. There is pressure from Netflix, who have dropped Meghan’s debut show Pearl [and] I think they are potentially struggling to stay relevant."
This comes after an insider claimed that Meghan and Harry are set for a second bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
