Matthew McConaughey announces he is NOT running for governor of Texas 'at this moment' despite topping to polls
DESPITE being a favorite in Texas’ upcoming gubernatorial race in 2022, Matthew McConaughey announced Sunday that he would not be running for governor “at this time.”
In a video posted to social media, the Academy Award-winning actor said that he had been considering a run for governor of the Lone-Star State.
“I’ve been listening, I’ve been learning, I’ve been measuring and studying Texas politics and American politics,” McConaughey said in a video flanked by two American flags.
McConaughey says he’s learned a lot during that time, believing that politics “needs new purpose” and that “we have divides that need healing.”
He called the consideration a “humbling path to ponder” but one that he is not choosing to take.
“What am I going to do? I’m going to continue to work and invest the bounty I have by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I believe are leaders.”
The actor also urged people to become “leaders and servants” in their own communities and that “good” politicians “can’t do anything for us unless we choose to do for ourselves.”
A new poll by the Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler suggested that a McConaughey gubernatorial run would have proved successful.
In a hypothetical scenario where the actor went against incumbent Gov Greg Abbott or challenger Beto O’Rourke in a one-on-one showdown, McConaughey was preferred more by voters.
However, in a three-way race, Abbott would just barely come out on top.
McConaughey had heavily considered running for office since March.
However, it was never clear if the actor would run as a Democrat, Republican or Independent.
In his video, McConaughey didn’t give a personal endorsement to anyone but his phrasing of “at this time” may allude to a political run in the future.
He ended the video with a salute, saying: “In the meantime, and all times and until next time, just keep living.”
