Madeleine McCann suspect has 'number of alibis' for day she vanished
The prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has a ‘number of people’ who can provide him with an alibi for the night the toddler vanished, it has been reported.
Christian Brueckner was named in June 2020 as German prosecutors’ main suspect in the Madeleine case.
The three-year-old disappeared from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, and has not been seen since.
Since the 44-year-old, who is currently serving time in a German prison for a number of sex and drug offences, was identified, claims about the police’s case against him have been rife.
Earlier this month, a witness claimed to have been with Brueckner around the time the youngster disappeared, claiming he was calm while she was with him.
Now it has been reported by The Sun that the woman is one of ‘multiple witnesses’ who Brueckner will rely on if questioned over the disappearance.
‘He has denied from day one that he is involved in any way with Maddie’s disappearance,’ an anonymous source quoted by The Sun has said.
‘That’s why his legal team have always worked on one thing – building a case which substantiates this claim.
‘They are now satisfied that there are a number of people who will support his story that he was nowhere near the resort the night Maddie went missing.
‘One woman has already said she will give a statement on this. And more witnesses will follow.’
The anonymous source has also claimed the witnesses ‘aren’t interested in covering up’ for Brueckner and that they ‘simply don’t want to see the wrong person convicted’ for Madeleine’s disappearance.
The revelations about how the case is progressing come amid claims Portuguese police are ‘convinced’ Brueckner was not involved in the toddler’s disappearance.
‘Officers in the Algarve have long believed German cops are trying to pin this case on the wrong person,’ a source quoted by The Sun has claimed.
‘Detectives in Praia da Luz ruled him out years and years ago – not least because his story about where he was and what he was doing checked out.’
Regardless of the claims, investigators are so sure they have the right man. They reportedly sent an undercover officer into the prison where Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American woman.
It was hoped that the police officer, disguised as another inmate, could get Brueckner to confess.
This is because the convicted sex offender is said to have opened up to a friend about Madeleine’s kidnapping years later.
However, the sting operation reportedly failed.
Prosecutors in Braunschweig have refused to comment on the supposed operation and Brueckner is now in a different jail.
