Paedophile Christian B has reportedly told a TV show he has an alibi for the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The German convicted sex offender was this week named an official suspect by the authorities.
After almost two years of maintaining his silence with the police when he was first linked to the case, B has allegedly claimed that he was elsewhere when Madeleine disappeared in 2007, the Sun reports.
An insider close to the case in Germany, where he is in prison, said: "It’s baffling as to why he should maintain that silence then finally come up with an explanation now. And it’s even more odd that he should give the details to a TV documentary rather than the authorities."
The Portuguese police declared B an "arguido" – a formal or named suspect – which gives authorities greater powers with any future requests to German police, and could eventually lead to him being extradited to the Algarve for formal questioning.
The insider hinted that his willingness to comment now might be due to the "arguido" move. They said: "Why didn’t he give his version of events on day one as soon as he was made a suspect?"
Madeleine vanished on a family holiday in Praia da Luz in the Algarve, Portugal, in May 2007. Marking the 15th anniversary of her disappearance, a new three-part documentary Madeleine McCann: Prime Suspect, from US network AMC Crime will reveal details on the case.
The documentary will feature British investigator Mark Williams-Thomas who told The Sun: "B had agreed to talk to me but the interview was blocked by prison authorities. We have since been in contact at length in writing and he has explained his position to me in detail."

He also added that the suspect claimed he was "entirely innocent" and told him "exactly where he was on the night Madeleine disappeared".
B, who is in jail for the rape of a US pensioner in Portugal in 2005, was named a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case in 2020, after the German police traced a mobile he was using to a phone mast 200 yards from Kate and Gerry’s Ocean Club apartment on the day Madeleine was taken.
Police was said to be focused on "potentially crucial" forensic evidence from a VW camper van, which the paedophile drove while he lived on the Algarve and from which children’s swimsuits and underwear are known to have been recovered.

One of his friend's, Dieter Fehling, claims in the documentary that the former also boasted about remodelling " a hiding place big enough to fit small children."
Meanwhile, Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry have welcome the news of B being named a formal suspect saying: "We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German man an 'arguido'.
"This reflects progress in the investigation. Even though the possibility may be slim, we have not given up hope that Madeleine is still alive and we will be reunited with her."
