Lottery ‘winner’ claims she washed £18.5m ticket – and may not get prize money

An £18.5million lottery prize winner may have washed the chance of a massive fortune down the drain.

A woman told workers at the store which sold her the ticket that she put it in her trousers – and it was destroyed in the laundry.

The shop boss said a surveillance video showed that the woman had bought the ticket there, and she is known to store workers. A copy of the video has now been passed to lottery bosses, the manager said.

But officials at the lottery say if a ticket is lost, punters must provide evidence that they owned it – such as a photograph of the front and back of the ticket.

Thursday marked the last day to redeem the $26million prize – equivalent to £18.5million – and no-one else had come forward, said Cathy Johnston, from the California Lottery.

She said the claim would now be investigated.

The winning SuperLotto Plus ticket was sold at a convenience store in Los Angeles.

The shop stands to receive a £92,000 bonus.

If the prize is not awarded, the money will go to public schools in California.

In other Lottery news, Care worker Vicky Channing was left crying tears of joy after winning £30,000 playing People's Postcode Lottery.

The 32-year-old, from Broad Oak, Kent, scooped the prize after her postcode, TN21 8TN, was announced as a winner.

But it wasn't until she received a Zoom call from People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Matt Johnson that she learned how much she had won.

When Matt revealed the cheque, tearful Vicky said: “Oh my God! Are you serious? Thank you so much, that’s amazing!”

Vicky plans on treating her two children, who are six and eight years old, to a trip to Disneyland when restrictions allow.
