King Charles III will be officially crowned as monarch at Westminster Abbey on June 3 next year, it is claimed.

Government officials say plans are pointing towards holding the ceremony on that Saturday at the beginning of summer, according to Bloomberg sources.

Charles' mother, Queen Elizabeth II's coronation was heled almost exactly 70 years earlier but next year's ceremony is expected to be a much smaller affair.

At the age of 74, as he will be by June 2023, His Majesty will become the oldest person to be crowned in British history.

The Daily Star has contacted Buckingham Palace for a comment which has so far dismissed the date as mere speculation in response to a request put to the Palace by The Mirror.

A spokesperson told the newspaper that reports are "purely speculation".
