Jeremy Clarkson: Fracking is the way forward if we like lit homes and central heating, whatever eco-mentalists say

ALL week, Lancashire people have been coming out of their houses to say they are very unhappy with the Government for allowing fracking to go ahead in their back yard.

Then they’ve gone back into their centrally heated homes and turned on the kettle to make a nice cup of tea.

Meanwhile, eco-mentalists have been appearing on television saying that instead of drilling for gas, we should cut down on the amount of electricity we consume.

I usually take their advice and turn the TV off at this point. Apparently, some people are worried that fracking will cause earthquakes.

They said that it’s happened before and they’re right. Just a couple of years ago, frackers caused a quake which measured 2.5 on the Richter scale.

Which is the same measurement you get if a lorry drives past your house.

Today the fracking industry is limited by law to causing quakes that measure no more than 0.5 on the Richter scale.

And if you want to know what that feels like, lift a paperback book about two feet off your kitchen table. Then drop it.

I’ll leave you with these facts.

Gas is used to heat 84 per cent of British homes. Gas is used to cook in 61 per cent of British homes.

And almost 50 per cent of the gas we use is imported from countries like Russia.
