On Wednesday, Mr Biden announced that the US would have amassed enough vaccines by the end of May to inoculate every adult in the country. He also revealed that his administration had ordered a further 100 million doses of the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine that requires a single shot. However, Mr Trump claimed in a statement that without his efforts, Americans would be still waiting for a Covid jab.

He said: “You wouldn’t be getting that beautiful ‘shot’ for five years, at best, and probably wouldn’t be getting it at all.

“I hope everyone remembers!”

The Biden administration previously said that Mr Trump had left them “a mess” on Covid vaccination.

The new US President also branded the Trump administration’s vaccine rollout in its early stages as a “dismal failure”.

At his Wednesday press conference, Mr Biden hailed his administration’s achievement in getting the vaccine out to the public.

He told reporters: “On Saturday, we hit a record 2.9 million vaccinations in one day in America, and beyond the numbers are the stories.

“A father who says he no longer fears for his daughter when she leaves to go to work at the hospital.

“The children are now able to hug their grandparents.

“The vaccines bring hope and healing in so many way.”

Some Biden officials have recognised the role that the Trump administration played in helping to develop vaccines.

Mr Trump introduced Operation Warp Speed in May 2020, a public-private partnership that provided the impetus for the rapid development of Covid vaccines, as well as diagnostics and tests.

Andy Slavitt, a senior adviser to the White House’s Covid team, told Fox News on Thursday: “We’re grateful for the work that came before us and are doing the best we can to continue it and accelerate it.”
