ISIS chief detonates bomb killing himself and 6 kids during midnight raid
American commandos swooped into a Syrian compound at the dead of night last night (February 2) in a raid that killed a top ISIS leader and tragically claimed the lives of six kids.
After commandos had Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraysh cornered, the ISIS chief detonated a bomb that ripped through his compound killing 13 people in the resultant blast which ripped through the foundations of the house.
Known as The Professor, Hasimi, was a veteran Jihad fighter who was well known to US forces.
Horrific pictures and videos from the scene show the aftermath of the bomb's explosion in the compound in Atmeh, North-West Syria.
Residents have reported that after US helicopters landed, there was a barrage of gunfire with US speakers asking residents to leave.
Another shocking video shows the bodies of two apparently lifeless children and a man in the rubble of a building at the location.
Other footage showed rescue workers loading what appeared to be a small body wrapped in a white plastic sheet into an ambulance. Other teams appeared to be recovering people who lost their lives in the back of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, horrific pictures – too graphic to show – inside the house show the devastating impact of the explosion with bloodstains visible on the walls and floor.
The makeshift kitchen of the squat property was badly burned and some windows hung from their panes having melted in the heat of the blast.
Using head torches in the dark, workers looked for remains through chunks of concrete, children's soft toys, and women's clothing in the damaged building.
Aerial photos of the property today show it has caved in on itself with the force of the bomb.
Local authorities continue to comb through the wreckage that is riddled with bullet holes and dried blood.
Breaking the news on his POTUS Twitter account, President Joe Biden said he had been 'taken off the battlefield'.
He said: “Last night at my direction, U.S. military forces successfully undertook a counterterrorism operation,” the tweet read.
“Thanks to the bravery of our Armed Forces, we have removed from the battlefield Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi — the leader of ISIS.”
"I’ll deliver remarks regarding this operation later this morning," another tweet followed.
