Inside Kate Middleton and Sophie Wessex’s ‘naughty but fun’ royal friendship

Kate Middleton and Sophie Wessex appear to have formed a very close relationship with the pair in giggle moods every time they jointly attend an event.

The two royals are often spotted having fun at events such as Royal Ascot and Paralympic Games.

Speaking to The Sun, body language expert Judi James has revealed more about Kate and Sophie’s relationship.

While analysing a photo of them at the 2012 Paralympic Games, James said: “Kate looks delighted to have made Sophie laugh like this and the slight nose-wrinkling suggests she thinks she is being rather naughty here.”

James also reviewed another photo of Kate, 50, and Sophie, 56, as the Countess of Wessex leaned in for a kiss on the cheek.

She said: “The two women meet face-to-face here and Kate’s raised brows and eyes widened in mock shock produce a matching, open-mouthed response from Sophie, showing those strong bonds of shared fun that clearly seem to exist when the two women aren’t out in public.”

Both the The Duchess of Cambridge and the Countess of Wessex have come from non-royal families but have been given big parts in the Royal Family’s working life.

It is believed their bond formed over adjusting into royal life from similar backgrounds.

However, according to New Idea’s Royal Monthly, Kate is ‘envious’ of Sophie’s relationship with the Queen.

An insider revealed the Countess of Wessex has been a “pillar of strength” for the Queen and is one of only a handful of Royal Family members allowed into her Majesty's private “bubble”.

The insider said: “They’re extremely similar in that they each have this take-charge mentality and feel equally protective of friends and family, especially the elder generation and Her Majesty, who adores them both.

“Lately Sophie has been the go-to for various personal matters as well as a sounding board for certain decisions about the monarchy, which she’s perfect for since she’s impartial and has no real agenda or issues with the likes of the Sussexes or the Yorks – she’s also incredibly understated and hard-working, albeit beneath the radar.

“But it’s raising Kate’s hackles because she’s getting less face time and her nose is put out, though she’d never admit it of course.”

The insider added: “They have always had a wonderful friendship, so it’s a real pity that this competitive streak they both have appears to have come between them.

“It’s more a case of awkwardness as opposed to tension, because at the end of the day they’re both on the same team and limelight stealing or showboating simple isn’t in their nature.”
