Inside Britain’s ‘poshest’ Wetherspoons that’s ‘spectacular in every way’

Not all Wetherspoons are created equal with one holding the title of probably poshest in the UK.

The desirable town of Bury-St-Edmunds, famed for its rich brewing history, has another beer-related accolade to its name – the home of perhaps the nicest ‘Spoons in the country.

The Corn Exchange in the Suffolk beauty spot is situated inside a Grade I listed building which first opened as a market in 1862.

The upper deck of the trading place, known then as a shambles, was built over 100 years later in 1969 and, in 2012, it was refurbished as a Wetherspoons.

The facelift was a big project, but Wetherspoon said it set out to use “as much of the existing fabric as possible” from the historic site.

Local artists were pulled in to help with the project, which revamped the old shambles building, constructed originally for £7,000 (about £1million today).

The design of the pub is inspired by British artist and architect William Morris, with nods to his work found throughout the interior of the boozer.

Details of its past are everywhere – light fittings are designed in line with old plans found during Weatherspoon’s research into the refit and the building’s original commissioned glass window has been reincorporated into the modern design.

Outside the building is no less grand, with Greek replica pillars lined up and standing guard in front of the entrance while elaborate detailing can be spotted at various points in the breathtaking boozer’s masonry.

Punters have been unsurprisingly affectionate towards the unique spot.

“Absolutely lovely building and pleasant to sit in surroundings,” one visitor wrote as part of their TripAdvisor review.

Another wrote: “What a lovely building looks as though it has recently been refurbished”.

"Spectacular in every way," said a third.

Located on Abbeygate Street, it does however seem that pretty doesn’t mean perfect – plenty of punters have been left frustrated reviews about other things in play during their visits.

“Typical Wetherspoons though the lovely building and the glass ceiling deserve 5 stars,” one said. “The rest merits 1. Sticky menus, unclean tables, poor service etc. Good value though.”
