How to tackle separation anxiety in dogs and cats — The Know

For the past year, pets have been living their best lives as many owners have been stuck working from home due to the pandemic.

However, as people begin to transition back to the office, some pets, especially dogs, may begin to experience separation anxiety.

Separation anxiety, or separation distress, is when a pet experiences feelings of panic when separated from their owners. Some of the signs associated with separation anxiety include:

  • Barking or whining
  • Destructive behavior
  • Urination or defecation indoors or in unwanted locations
  • Lack of appetite when alone
  • Self-trauma like licking or chewing when alone
  • Attempts to escape
  • Breaking through windows or chewing through doors or walls
  • Pacing or panting

So what are some things pet parents can do to help their dogs and cats overcome separation anxiety? Experts say exercise, discipline and affection are the three biggest solutions.
