UK weather: Met Office forecasts spike in temperatures

Weather forecasters have predicted a burst of sun for early June, with a welcome change in temperature driving people outside. The sun has finally broken through May’s thick cloud, ending a cycle of heavy rain and wind which has plagued the country for weeks. Today, temperatures will climb to the highest seen in 2021 so far.

How hot could it get today?

After a stunning bank holiday weekend, weather forecasts have only improved for the UK.

Temperatures over the last few days have grazed the 20C mark for the first time in 2021, and today they will spike towards 30C.

The Met Office has forecast maximum temperatures of 29C for the UK today.

London and Southeast England will bathe in the highest temperatures of 2021.

But the mercury will remain high around the rest of the country as well.

Elsewhere, temperatures remain around 20C, as the heat spreads northward to Scotland.

While the southeast will undoubtedly see the best weather, it could also see the worst.

The Met Office’s forecast for June 2 also warns of potential severe weather.

Today, London will see “very warm” conditions shift into “isolate heavy, thundery showers”.

The risk pursues into the afternoon and evening, with a warning for Plymouth and parts of Wales.

There, forecasters believed thundery showers could develop from as early as 5am to 11am.

They warned lightning would become the “main hazard”, accompanied by nearly an inch of rainfall.

The Met Office predicted rainfall totals between 15mm and 20mm (0.5 to 0.7 inches).

However, the storms “nature” means some areas will “see little or no rain and miss the lightning”, the organisation added.

The current run of mixed conditions is likely to continue in the near future.

In their long-range forecast, the Met Office predicted temperatures would hold in the low 20C range, but periods of rain would persist.

From June 6 to 15, “cloudier outbreaks and outbreaks of rain” will work their way across the country.

Temperatures will remain “on the milder side of average”, but people can still count on some hot weather.

The Met Office added a chance for “very warm or hot spells” during the period remains.
