Horror cruise inferno sparks evacuation as fire rips through ship balcony

Over 3,000 guests and 1,000 crew were forced to flee their rooms as a fire ripped through the balcony of a cruise ship off the coast of Australia.

At around 3.30am on May 28 passengers on the Pacific Adventure, which was just south of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia were called to muster in a safe place by panicked crew.

Frightening photographs show the flames bursting out of the balcony as people watch on in horror. Passengers are then seen mustered together in life jackets elsewhere on the ship.

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises Australia said the flames were quickly dealt with, but their cause remains unknown.

Ship tracking websites show that the newly renovated ship is headed back to port, cutting the cruise by two days.

The statement read: "This fire activated our emergency response procedures including a full muster of guests and crew and we thank everyone on board for their cooperation.

"There are no reports of injury.

The extent of the damage and the cause of the fire are yet to be fully determined and remain under investigation."

9News reported that the ship was was carrying 3017 guests and 1080 crew and was scheduled to return on Tuesday.

Pacific Adventure was the third and final ship to join P&O Cruises Australia's fleet in October last year.
