A ‘hero’ son has died after trying to save his dad from a house fire, caused by an e-bike left charging overnight.

Gary Shearer, 23, has been named locally as the son of Rab Shearer, 60, who died in a house fire in Litherland earlier this month.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) were called to Daisy Mews at 3am on Sunday, January 8. Upon arrival, firefighters found two people inside the house.

Fire crews and North West Ambulance Service paramedics performed CPR on the occupants. One person found inside the house died at the scene and was named locally as Rab Shearer.

Rab’s son Gary was said to be in a ‘critical’ condition before dying on Sunday, January 22, two weeks on from the blaze.

Gary died after trying to save his dad from a house fire, caused by an e-bike left charging overnight

Following the news of Gary’s death, a number of tributes posted on social media described how the ‘hero’ tried to save his dad’s life.

The Beaky Social Club in Bootle posted: ‘Shirley, Margy & the bar staff & customers send our sincere condolences to Ray Shearer, Andrew Shearer & all the Shearer family, on the loss of their beloved brother Gary Shearer, no words can ease the pain you feel today, but please know we are here if you need anything,

‘RIP Gary you gave your life to try to save your beloved dad, what a hero you are, sleep peacefully now, safe in your mum & dad’s loving arms, goodbye & God bless. Sympathy & love to all the Shearer family & anyone who is hurting today by this awful news.’

A GoFundMe, originally set up for the family after the death of Rab Shearer, confirmed the news of Gary’s death.

Gary Shearer was put in an induced coma at the hospital before sadly passing away two weeks later

A message posted read: ‘Unfortunately on Sunday Gary also sadly lost his life we are all devastated no family should have to go through this so we have raised our target and we’re raising more to help the family rebuild and pay for Gary’s last farewell.

‘Rest in perfect paradise cheeky face you’ll be sadly missed in our close.’

A MFRS spokesperson told the ECHO: ‘Sadly we can confirm we have been informed that the second person seriously injured in the fire at Daisy Mews, Litherland has passed away.’

A spokesperson for MFRS said at the time a further person managed to escape the property and raise the alarm. They were woken by smoke alarms before being taken to hospital suffering from severe smoke inhalation.

A joint investigation between MFRS and Merseyside Police revealed the fire was accidental and caused by an e-bike left charging overnight.

The fire rapidly took hold and spread quickly through open internal doors.
